Sharps Safety

OBJECTIVE:
To decrease the number of sticks within the dialysis unit by educating staff on needle stick prevention and protocol for sharps exposure.
ACTIVITIES REQUIRED FOR DIAMOND STATUS:
  • Complete an in-service training module (PowerPoint Presentation) on needle stick prevention.
  • Complete the CDC's Baseline Program Assessment Worksheet. This worksheet should be adapted for use in your unit.
OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES:
  • Develop display board of sharps devices for your facility.
  • Make an inventory list of sharps devices for your facility.
  • Create a model exposure control plan for your facility.
  • Complete the sharps crossword puzzle as a warm-up to your in-service.
  • Complete all of Appendix A in the Workbook Toolkit.
  • Create an exposure treatment poster for your facility.
  • Distribute the CDC's sharps brochure and/or hang CDC posters in your unit.

MEASURE(S):
  • 100% of staff in-serviced on needle stick prevention.
  • Facility must complete the sample Baseline Program Assessment Worksheet.
